A gorgeous wool & silk hand-knotted Herati Rug.
This pattern is a widely used and ancient motif, variously interpreted as portraying vine leaves or fish, found both in main field and as a border decoration.
It is a motif widely used in Persia as well as in India, it is thought to symobolize the small fishes that, at the time of the full moon, come up to just beneath the surface of water to swim in the moon's reflection. Thus the Herati design sometimes referred to as the fish design.
