Two dark, angular medallions punctuate the vivid red field of this fine Baluchi rug, each paired with a slender panel of multicoloured stripes. Broader striped forms repeat along the sides, while small hooked motifs fill the spaces between. Narrow borders gather blue, green and ochre details against a dark ground.

Hand-knotted in Afghanistan from pure wool pile, the rug draws its character from the contrast between bold central forms and intricate surrounding details. Ivory outlines sharpen the pattern and give the deeper colours clear definition.
