Two distinct motifs share the field: compact octagonal guls and taller angular forms, set in alternating rows over vivid red. Their measured spacing draws the eye across the rug before the border takes over, tightening into diamonds and stepped lines. Small ivory and blue-grey accents sharpen the burgundy and dark navy pattern; the pale fringe gives the richly worked edge a clean finish.

Turn back a corner and the geometry remains visible on the reverse, in quieter colour. Hand-knotted in Afghanistan from wool, this Afghan Turkoman rug has the scale to define a living room seating area. Timber brings out its deeper reds, while pale upholstery heightens the contrast with the dark motifs.
