The border changes everything. Against a clear red field, two columns of compact blue guls advance in an even rhythm, punctuated by ivory star-like forms. Around them, successive bands of navy, teal, muted purple and red build a vivid frame, each shift in colour adding depth without disturbing the order of the centre.

Hand-knotted in Afghanistan from pure wool pile, this Turkoman runner brings discipline and exuberance into the same composition. Its geometry remains rooted in tradition, but the jewel-toned border gives the piece an unusually expressive character.
