Rows of dark gul-style motifs travel across a vivid red field, each picked out by small ivory marks. At the edges, the rhythm tightens into layered diamond lattices and narrow geometric bands in burgundy and charcoal. The border is intricate, but the eye always finds its way back to the red.

Hand-knotted in Afghanistan with a pure wool pile, this Afghan Turkoman rug rewards a closer look. Its repeating forms give the design order, while the finer geometry of the border keeps revealing new detail.
