A field of burning red gives this rug its first impact. Across it, eight octagonal guls stand in disciplined formation, their compartmented interiors shifting between dark blocks, diamonds and small rosettes. Branching motifs punctuate the open ground, while broad black and burgundy borders intensify the design through crosses, stepped geometry and close-set repeats.

The beauty lies in the tension between exuberance and order. A pure wool pile, hand-knotted in Afghanistan, gives the intricate pattern a rich tactile presence. Colour supplies the heat.
